'Hand to God's' puppets & Satanic possession go together like Mary Poppins & Death Metal

File this under "Genius."  When we first read the script for 'Hand to God', the story of a hand puppet in a Church basement in Texas who claims to be possessed by Satan, we said 'What the hell......this sounds amazing." (Spoiler alert: it is)  It didn't make sense at first, the pairing of puppetry used to teach children about religion and Satanic possession, however upon the second reading it made perfect sense to us.  Of course a puppet in a church basement would claim to be possessed by Satan, after all, in the late 1980's 'Satanic Panic' was sweeping across the nation, convincing everyone that Satan was waiting just around the corner....to possess you.
The keystone to the belief, the one thing that would give away one's possession was... Death Metal. Yes, listening to Death metal would signify to the outside world that you had been possessed by the devil.  Just as the cast of 'Hand to God' sees Satan hiding in every corner, preparing to take over their lives, when Jason's puppet is possessed it proves their theory right--THE DEVIL IS EVERYWHERE!   And maybe they're right, because we found proof of possession in Mary Poppins singing death metal.
