2020 Mainstage Show Line-Up

Picture
As the pandemic continues to shift our world, we too must shift with it. Quarantine has altered how we imagine theatre and we have risen to the challenge by aiming to provide engaging programming that seeks to uplift and unite us all during this time, through collaboration with Bruka Theatre and Reno Little Theater via our Ghost Light TV channel. Our leadership team is working diligently, everyday, coordinating with local and national organizations to develop a comprehensive reopening strategy.

We know that streaming is not the same, not the same as being in the space together, and perhaps you too are feeling the "screen fatigue", and are eager for the chance to return to theater and see a live performance. We are eager too - we have now reached the point in our Netflix cue where the algorithm is judging our questionable selections. However, our fervent desire to return to what we love to do, must always be tempered with caution and thoughtful consideration for the health and well-being of our audiences and our creatives. With that in mind, we don't feel it's possible to reopen the theater anytime soon. We have decided to officially cancel our productions of "Noises Off" and "Cannibal the Musical". We are postponing our production of "The Colony" with the intention of producing it next year. We are pushing back our production of "Puffs" with the hope that we will be able to mount this production in October.

These were all difficult decisions; ones that were made through numerous Zoom meetings and in consultation with other leaders in the field. We grieve the loss of many performances from this season, plays that we were excited to produce, the joy and laughter not shared, the missed collective in-take of breath at that shocking plot twist, but above all else, our opportunity to share all of these moments with you. Know that we remain fully committed to fulfilling our mission and committed to serving our community the best that we are able.  Theatre is essential, now more than ever.

As always, we are forever grateful for your continued support and appreciate you being part of the GLM family. We will get through this, and on the other side we will find ourselves stronger, with a renewed vigor and passion for this business we call show. Take care of yourselves and one another. In the immortal words of the one Miss Miley Cyrus "Now I can't wait to see you again".

Noises Off
by Michael Frayn, March 6th - March 12th :(

Michael Frayn's Noises Off takes a fond look at the follies of theatre folk, whose susceptibility to out-of-control egos, memory loss, and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk adventure. This play-within-a-play captures a touring theatre troupe’s production of Nothing On in three stages: dress rehearsal, the opening performance, and a performance towards the end of a debilitating run. Frayne gives us a window into the inner workings of theatre behind the scenes, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the dress rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance. Brimming with slapstick comedy, Noises Off is a delightful backstage farce, complete with slamming doors, falling trousers, and -- of course -- flying sardines.

The Revolutionists
by Lauren Gunderson, Postponed until 2021

Four beautiful, badass women lose their heads in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in 1793 Paris. This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we actually go about changing the world. It's a true story. Or total fiction. Or a play about a play. Or a raucous resurrection…that ends in a song and a scaffold.

Puffs
by Matt Cox,
Postponed until October

For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs... who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world. puffstheplay.com

The Colony
by Gina Stevensen,
Postponed until 2021

The Colony is a new play about the eugenics movement in America. Synopsis: In 1924 Virginia, a dirt-poor young woman named Carrie Buck is brought to a mysterious medical facility. No one will tell her why she’s here, or where her two-month-old daughter is. The Doctor in charge is a charming progressive, a student of the new science of heredity and genes. In Carrie, he finds the missing link his movement has been searching for, placing her at the center of a chain of events that will lead all the way to the Supreme Court. Based on a true story, The Colony asks: how does our society, past and present, regulate the bodies of women who are deemed “undesirable”?
