"Today is my last official day as Executive Director of Good Luck Macbeth Theatre Company. Spoiler Alert, long post ahead. For weeks I have been trying to write a post that would succinctly encapsulate everything I am feeling right now. Every time I would sit down, I would feel blocked. To take a line from our Big Coming Out Show last year, I don’t know how to start this goodbye. Do I thank all the people who had such an immense impact on me, personally and professionally, that helped support and grow the mission of GLM? There are too many people to tag and thank, and whatever words I would muster, would feel inadequate to properly acknowledge their contributions. But know that I am so grateful to all of you. It has truly been an honor to work, grow, and create at GLM.
Do I talk about everything that I have learned and experienced during my time; an iconic sermon to start your Wednesday? No, for that you will have to come to next one-woman solo show in December, tickets available soon on www.goodluckmacbeth.org. I will share, the next time you interact with an Executive Director, or Managing Director, or Producing Artistic Director of a theatre give them a hug (if this is within their boundaries), buy them a coffee (tea is also acceptable I guess), tell them good job (or even great job), and ask them what do they need, and what would feel supportive in that moment. The truth is this job is hard, really f*cking hard sometimes. I think any leadership position is, especially in a non-profit, and especially in the Arts. This job can be lonely, at times isolating, and soul-crushing with the weight of pressure and stress. Reflecting upon the last 8 years, I acknowledge have made plenty of mistakes, things that I wished I would have handled differently, and projects that took up permanent residence in that parking lot of ideas, which never came to fruition. I am not perfect, and nowhere in my job description did it require I needed to be. I also celebrate all the incredible work, joyous times, and beautiful gifts that came out of those eight years. I celebrate the relationships that I have forged and the hardships that we have overcome. I celebrate where GLM is going and the incredible future that is store. So, I don’t know how to start this goodbye. Probably because it doesn’t feel like goodbye. Today, feels like any other day. I will go to the theater for back-to-back meetings and then attend Evil Dead rehearsal. And really this isn’t goodbye, as I am sure that I will find new and different ways to support the theater. However, that feels like something that will happen later after I have fully processed and grieved. So today, I am a little raw, a little emotional, and a little nostalgic. Feel free to comment with your favorite theatre memory of us, favorite GLM moment, or favorite iconic queer moments in the Arts – to make me laugh or gay gasp in jubilation. So, I don’t know how to start this goodbye, so I won’t, and instead just simply say I love you all so much, and look forward to what’s next." - Christopher Daniels ![]() “The New Works Initiative's 10-10 Play Festival is unique in the way that we focus on local writers in our community. This year's festival is particularly important as we are presenting 5 plays written by local high school students. We are very excited to give these students a platform for their voices to be heard as well as the opportunity to work with a creative team that will bring their words to life on stage.” Sandra Brunell Neace, Co-Director of Good Luck Macbeth’s New Works Initiative. GLM's New Works Initiative is a program that honors and produces new and original work each season. “It is our mission to spotlight playwrights, and their work, from across the nation. Each season we give one new work a full production as part of GLM's season and we produce two staged readings. The program helps us to connect with artists all over the country and even internationally.” Two of the original plays produced at GLM, Raquel Lopez's In Our Own Backyard and Greg Burdick's Monessen Falls, have both received publication. “We feel excited and proud to be a part of those writers' journeys.” Neace adds. One thing Neace is looking forward to is celebrating local playwrights and hearing their stories. “It has been a particularly rough couple of years and it will be very interesting to see how our current times have influenced our writers and what stories the playwrights think are important to tell.” An accomplished actor, director and playwright, Neace offers this wisdom to aspiring writers, “Keep writing. Surround yourself with writers. Even if you write 15 minutes a day because that is all you can do - well, that will add up. Just keep going.” Sandy will be hosting the Playwright’s Workshop on Saturday, June 18th at 10am. It is a wonderful chance for students and young writers to come exercise their skills. “I am coming off a playwriting residency that I attended in Louisville, Kentucky and I feel energized and excited to share things that I learned. I always bring fun to the classroom and this workshop will be no different. All writers should participate in workshops like this because it is important to surround yourself with inspiration and to always be working on your craft.” Tickets to the 10-10 Festival are available here. The Table was born out of a desire to create a space for lgbtqqip2saa and bipoc creatives to write, direct, and produce their own original works. It was also hopefully a space for the creatives to collaborate in a non-hierarchal space that aimed to foster equity and work toward decolonizing theatre spaces. Table members met regularly to discuss their pieces and work in conjunction with Joe Atack, our Producing Artistic Director, on staging, blocking, and teching the performance.
Make sure to check out all of the performances on our Youtube Channel. This program was made possible, in part, due to the support of the City of Reno and the Arts & Culture Commission. We are grateful to the Nevada Arts Council for the their continued support of Arts organizations in the state of Nevada. Good Luck Macbeth was fortunate enough to be a recipient of the 2-year Operating Support Grant. This program/project was
supported, in part, by the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the state of Nevada. It is due to efforts of organizations like this that Good Luck Macbeth continues to produce high quality and relevant material for our community. As the pandemic continues, financial support of any kind is of the utmost importance to ensure that we continue to make it through these difficult times. Earlier this year, GLM received Emergency CARES Act Funding courtesy of Nevada Arts Council. This program/project was supported, in part, by the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the state of Nevada. We want to take this opportunity to thank them for their continued diligence in supporting Arts organizations in Nevada.
Good Luck Macbeth is excited to partner with Stitches Clothing Co. and their #tshirtsforReno campaign. Stitches Clothing Co. is producing customized apparel to benefit local businesses in town during these difficult times. Folks will be able to get their very own, limited edition Ghost Light TV t-shirts and tote bags. With every purchase, $10 will go directly to benefit GLM, Bruka Theatre, and Reno Little Theater.
Every little bit helps as we strive to keep our doors open. The campaign ends May 10th so make sure that you grab your items before then. On behalf of the entire Good Luck Macbeth staff, board, and the dedicated volunteers that work with us on every show, we hope that this message finds you healthy and happy as we all navigate the current situation and this new world. As I’m sure you are aware, on March 13th we decided, in consultation and unity with Bruka and Reno Little Theater, to temporarily close our doors. We will now be extending the closure through April based on municipal, state, and federal recommendations.
Since then, we have been working diligently to ensure the continued operations of Good Luck Macbeth and to determine how to move forward with our 2020 season. Unfortunately, we have to announce the cancellation of the next production in our 2020 season, The Revolutionists. This was a really difficult decision to make. We love this show. We love what it stands for; the inspiring themes of perseverance, equality, and revolution are messages our community need right now. However, given the current situation, we feel it is in the best interests of the safety and well-being of the cast and crew, and to ensure the highest artistic quality possible for the production, to postpone the production. At present we simply cannot rehearse the show and be ready to open on May 1st. We are still committed to producing The Revolutionists with an all-female identifying cast and crew, and so we will be moving the show into our 2021 season. We press forward mindfully and with a steady resolve. We know that Art changes; it changes lives, heart, minds, and culture. We know that Art will shift and evolve with all that is happening in our world, and we will evolve with it. No matter the distance between us right now, we know that Art will continue to connect us, and uplift us, during these times. |
